Suggestions
for small group study
Come prepared. The group study will be enhanced to the extent
that the individuals in it prepare beforehand. Prepare by prayerfully
reading the passage to be studied. As you begin, pray that God will
help you to understand what you are reading. Use a clear, modern
translation of the Bible (i.e. The New International Version,
or The New Revised Standard Version). Make notes of any
questions you may have as you read the passage. Bring these with
you when you meet with the rest of the group.
Participate. Be willing
to participate in the discussion. The study will not be a lecture.
The leader will be encouraging everyone in the group to discuss
what they have learned from the passage. The leader will be asking
the questions in the guides provided. Be ready to share with others
what God has been teaching you through the Word.
Stay on task. Stick to the verses in the Bible that are being
studied. Try not to jump around the Scriptures or refer to outside
sources such as commentaries or speakers. There will be time for
this later, but the first goal is to let the Bible speak for itself.
Be sensitive. Listen
to others in the group. Try not to dominate the conversation, but
allow everyone else in the group to participate. Be affirming and
attempt to link what you say to the comments of others so the discussion
stays on track.
Expect to learn! Expect
God to teach you through his word and others in the group. The Scriptures
were meant to be studied in community. You will be amazed how God's
Spirit works through other believers to help you understand the
Bible in ways you could not alone.
