What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is a year-long process that enables young people to learn the habits of spending time with God and His community. It's a time to develop and proclaim a relationship with Jesus Christ, and is filled with questions and searching. Young people explore the idea and practice of what it means to be a disciple of Christ, particularly in their world. The process is rigorous and intensive. It requires a great deal of commitment and energy from the student and parents. However, confirmation is fun, too, and students look forward to and enjoy the journey.
The participants study the scriptures, creeds, and history of the Church. They also experience what it means to live out faith in community. Students have an opportunity to become members of Newton Presbyterian Church on Palm Sunday. We want them to develop habits and skills that will continue to be refined throughout their whole life with Jesus Christ.
Confirmation is split into two phases. The first is an intensive educational and training experience where students are prepared to become full and active members of the Church. The second phase begins after they become members. A "shepherd," or older, loving member of the church, provides continued discipleship. The student also participates in a mission project.
